Golden Slipper 2017 race preview

17 March 2017 12:57 PM

The $3.5 million 2017 Golden Slipper is scheduled to jump at 4.10pm at Rosehill tomorrow. The track was a heavy 10 at 9 am on Friday morning. There's wind and some more rain on its way, so your guess is as good as mine as to where the track will be when they jump tomorrow. You can be sure it will be a bog.

As I type, there are no scratchings in this epic two-year-old contest with sixteen starters and three emergencies waiting for their opportunity to take part in the great race.

Golden Slipper form analysis

15. Houtzen comes into the big race with an unbeaten record. Two of those wins were on soft tracks, she jumped from barrier 16 to win one of the others and carried a massive 63kg for her latest win. Hard to knock her even jumping from barrier 16.Betting Odds for the Golden Slipper

9. Catchy is another filly starting with a perfect '4 from 4' record. Has a freakish turn of foot and showed plenty of character in her wins. Hasn't raced on anything worse than a good 4 but that doesn't mean she won't handle the going. Top hope.

12. She Will Reign has a win and a second from two starts on heavy. Unlucky to strike the slower part of the track last start. Contender.

11. Tulip comes off a gutsy win last week jumping from barrier 11, sitting wide with cover and then running over the top of them on a slow 7. Ticks a lot of boxes on that effort. Can win.

1. Pariah comes off a close second to Catchy when running wide throughout. Must be considered on that effort.

13. Frolic. Past two runs were impressive. The most recent on a heavy 9. Wide gate is less than desirable but if she gets cover, she will be set to run down the best part of the home straight.

Of the others, Diamond Tathagata has won and placed at his two career starts, both on heavy tracks and against reasonable opposition.

Selections

1st 15. Houtzen. Can't find a reason to go past her here, even with the wide barrier. She's been very dominant in her wins and assuming she gets cover, a wide position on the turn is likely to set her up well to get the best going in the run for home.

2nd 1. Pariah was impressive behind Catchy last start and presents great value at quotes of $10. If he handles the going he should be right in this from barrier 4.

3rd 9. Catchy

4th 13. Frolic
