Goodwood 2017 race preview

19 May 2017 10:41 AM

Morphettville hosts the Group 1 Goodwood, which together with the four Group 3 races on the card, gives punters a top day of racing to feast on in the city of churches.

The Goodwood brings together a top field that includes some of the best sprinting talent in the country. The 1200m starts in a chute at the top of the side straight and gives runners 450m of straight before they begin the one and only turn in the race before they set sail for the winning post. It's one of the fairest courses for the distance around, which is reflected in the barrier winning strikes rates where there is little noticeable difference across the first 13 gates.

#1 Black Heart Bart - odds fluctuations 10am 19/5 - 3.6, 3.4, 3.5
horse racing

Has finished in the quinella five times from seven fresh starts. Top class sprinter. Hard to beat.

#7 Vega Magic - odds fluctuations 10am 19/5 - 7.5, 7, 6.5, 7, 6.5

Rates well on his Winterbottom effort where he finished 1.5 lengths away. Has a good fresh record and well drawn to get a forward position. Contender.

#6 Secret Agenda - odds fluctuations 10am 19/5 - unchanged

Steps-up here but she has earned this opportunity on the back of her easy on-pace win in the G1 Sangster after jumping from barrier 16. Look for a good show here.

#2 Malaguerra - odds fluctuations 10am 19/5 - 8.5, 8

His form this preparation has been a mixed bag. Beat Black Heart Bart by two lengths at Moonee Valley when resuming then was no match for him at his next start over 1400m at Caulfield in the CF Orr. Didn't handle the heavy going at Randwick at his recent outing. Can make a case on his fresh win on dryer ground.

#11 First Among Equals - odds fluctuations 10am 19/5 - 20, 21, 19, 20, 21

Comes under notice after finishing one length away in the Winterbottom. Resumed winning the listed Northam Stakes. Chance.

#5 Illustrious Lad - odds fluctuations 10am 19/5 - unchanged

Looked strong again when a close second in the G3 Irwin at his recent outing. Two runs prior were inconclusive. Tough draw but can make his presence felt if back to his best.

Off the others.....

Sweet Sherry looks a talented type. Although she's up against some quality oppoisition here I expect her to put in a strong performance which could see her get amongst the place getters.

Selections

1st Black Heart Bart - has the class edge, loves it fresh and gets conditions to suit.

2nd Secret Agenda
