Australian and Randwick Guineas Time

The big races keep rolling in this Saturday with feature events the Australian Guineas at Flemington and the Randwick Guineas at headquarters, both Group 1 events for three-year-olds.

Australian Guineas

Flemington hosts the Australian Guineas run over 1600m which sees Alpine Eagle back-up after his bold win last Saturday to take on Kermadec, Wandjina, Stratum Star and Petrology to name a few.

Bookies opened up Kermadec $3.70 favourite earlier in the week after his two runs this prepartion provided the perfect launch pad for this event. Since then punters have come for him, shortening his odds into $3.50. He should be ready to step up to the 1600m now, a distance that he has won and placed at from two previous attempts.

Alpine Eagle backs-up after only racing seven days ago so McEvoy must think he is going well enough to race again so quickly. He drops back in distance from last week when he put a solid performance in to win in Group 2 company. Should be one of the main chances with a hint of value at current quotes of $6.50

Wandjina started this preparation well a few weeks ago winning in Group 3 company. Came close over the 1600m in a black type even last preparation and his chances increase if there is a lot of speed. Stratum Star and Merion both ran well behind his last run and have strong claims again this week.

Prepared to forgive Petrology last start and I expect a much bolder run in this.

Randwick Guineas

It looks a race between the four star three-year-olds at Randwick. Tied for favouritism at $3.20, Hallowed Crown backs-up after his very smart first-up win in the Hobartville a few weeks ago. First time for him beyond 1400m is the only question mark.

Sweynesse will welcome the extra distance and looks better suited here to improve on his runner-up effort behind the favourite last time.

Scissor Kick is another horse who will run this distance for the first time. Last start was better than it seemed after a less than desirable trip from barrier 13. Will enjoy barrier 3 more but the distance is still a query.

Joint favourite Shooting To Win is the other joint favourite losing no fans after a solid run in the Hobartville. A winner over 1600m, expect him to improve on that run and give this a big shake.
