Hawkesbury Punters Survival Guide

29 April 2016 10:41 AM

With only a few Saturday meetings held at Hawkesbury each year you would be forgiven if you felt a little anxious about doing the form for this weekend's racing.

We've put together a survival guide which we hope eases the challenge whether your doing the form or looking for some advice on the punt over the nine race program on Saturday.

The Track

Hawkesbury is quite a unique track. Most punters aren't aware that the 1600m, 1800m and 2000m have one of the longest straight runs in the country (that is if you don't include the dog leg at the 1700m mark as a turn). Runners jumping at the 2000m have almost 1 kilometre to run before they meet the first turn into the side straight.

The straight is an sizeable 400m long and it's width is about about 8 to 10m thinner than major metropolitan tracks at 20m.

Rain is forecasted on Saturday which isn't great news for the track. At the same meeting last year only one race was run before the meeting was abandoned having received only a fair downfall prior to race day. Punters can conclude that the track's drainage isn't great and that any rain is likely to make an descent impact on the going.

The Barriers

Looking at statistics over the last eight years a clear bias exists towards the inside barriers up to 1100m. Less of a bias at 1300m and no obvious bias thereafter.

This pattern is consistent with the long back straight that runners meet when they run over distances between 1400 - 2100m which tends to give wider starters an even chance to settle before entering the first turn.

Track Experts

For punters that would prefer to rely on an expert opinion for tomorrow's Hawkesbury meeting, there's no better approach then looking towards punters who have proven their knowledge of the track.
