George Watson Handicap 2017 race preview
20 July 2017 15:44 PM
Run over 2000m at Flemington where the track was rated a Good 4 on Thursday morning, the weather is tipped to stay dry and the rail is out 3 metres for the entire circuit.
The Flemington 2000m course gives all runners a great opportunity in the race with 600m of back straight in front of them before they meet the sweeping turn into the home straight.
The last time they raced here was on July 8. It was a Good 4 for races 4 through to 9 on that day and the track played fair.
Market Movers
There has been a lot of interest early in the market with the noted firmers including top weight Killarney Kid, currently $4.60 (at 3pm 20 / 7 /2017) in from $4.80, and Magic Consol who is in half a point to $5.50.
Key Runners
#4 Kilimanjaro - odds fluctuations 6.30 pm 20/7 - 2.8, 3, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3
Top return at Flemington last start finishing a close third carrying 58.5kg over 1800m. Had not raced for two years prior to that when finishing midfield in the Epsom Derby and Irish Derby in the UK. Will be fitter second-up and extra distance suits. Top chance.
#1 Killarney Kid odds fluctuations 6.30 pm 20/7 - 4.8, 4.5, 4.6, 4.5, 4.6
First and latest runs were good this preparation. Gets out to his favoured distance here where he has won 8 from 11 starts. One of the main contenders.
#5 Magic Consol odds fluctuations 6.30 pm 20/7 - 6, 5.5
Has been good at his three recent outings. Handled the rise to 1800m well last start. Rates well and expect him to be in the finish.
#8 Pacodali odds fluctuations 6.30 pm 20/7 - 5.5, 6, 5.5, 5, 5.5
Has been solid in each of his four outings this preparation. Appreciated the extra distance when he won with a leg in the air at his recent start. Genuine form horse who is right in this.
#2 Extra Zero odds fluctuations 6.30 pm 20/7 - 8, 8.5, 9
Ten year old who is still giving his rivals a run for their money. Put in a solid chase to run a close second behind Pacodali at his recent outing. Was solid in his two runs before that one. Hard to rule the old timer out.
#6 Victory Downs odds fluctuations 6.30 pm 20/7 - 9, 8.5, 9, 9.5
Probably should have won the Winter Championship when he couldn't get out at a vital point in the straight. Won the Swan Hill Cup the race before that. Winning chance.
Off the others.....
Master Zephyr put in a good effort last start and looked solid through the line. A repeat of that effort puts him in with a chance.
Selections
1st Killarney Kid - hard to go past him here at the 2000m. Expect him to be very strong and right in the finish.
2nd Victory Downs
3rd Magic Consol
